Does ChatGPT Recommend Your Business?

More of your customers now ask an AI assistant instead of scrolling search results: who’s a good electrician near Crystal River? The assistant names a few businesses and moves on. If yours is not one of them, that customer may never see you at all.

AI assistants recommend far fewer businesses than Google’s map results do. One 2026 study found ChatGPT named about 1 in 100 local businesses, where Google’s top three map results covered about a third (SOCi). Only about half of businesses had accurate details in AI answers.

How the assistants decide

The assistants do not have a secret list. They build each answer from what the web already says, and the research points to a few things that matter most.

  • What other sites say about you. Mentions of a business across the web track AI visibility about three times more strongly than backlinks do (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands). Reviews, directories, local press and community answers all count.
  • Clear, consistent facts. The same name, services, location and prices everywhere. Conflicting facts are how an assistant gets a business wrong.
  • Pages that answer the question directly. Search engines say they favor content that states the answer near the top, one topic per page.
  • Your Google Business Profile and reviews, which feed local AI answers.

What does not move it: special AI files, so-called AI schema, or publishing more pages for the sake of it. Google says no special optimization is needed beyond doing the fundamentals well.

Why most businesses are missing

Most small businesses have a website and a profile, and little else being said about them anywhere the assistants look. Their details differ from one listing to the next, and nothing on the web answers the questions their customers are asking. None of that shows up as an error. The business is simply not named.

No one can guarantee placement in an AI answer. What can be done is to measure where you stand, work on what drives it, and report what changes.
