Google Business Profile Help: What the Help Pages Leave Out

Google’s own help pages explain one setting at a time: how to add your hours, how to verify, how to edit a service. What an owner also needs is the picture around those pages: which rules get a profile suspended or quietly ignored, what you can and cannot measure, and the other listings your customers check before they call.

Start with how Google ranks local results. Google says they are “mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity”, and “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google” (Google Business Profile Help). Distance you cannot change. Relevance and prominence come from complete, accurate details and from what customers say about you.

The rules that cost owners the most

  • Your name is your real-world name. Adding a town or a service to it can cost you the profile: Google says unnecessary information in the name “could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.”
  • Fewer categories, not more. Google asks for “the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business.”
  • The description is not an ad. No sales, prices or promotions, and no links of any kind.
  • One profile per business. If you travel to customers, hide your address and keep your service area within about two hours of driving from where you are based.

What you can measure, and what you cannot

Google gives no figures per service. You cannot see how many calls your “drain cleaning” service brought in. The closest thing is the search terms breakdown in the Performance report, which shows the searches your profile appeared for. Read it against your services list and you will see which ones people actually look for.

Reviews: earned, answered, never bought

Google removes reviews that were paid for or rewarded with “payment, discounts, free goods and/or services,” and it does not allow asking only your happy customers. Ask everyone the same way, or not at all. Google also says replying to reviews “shows that you value their feedback.” A short, specific reply to every review, the good and the bad, is worth the few minutes it takes.

Google is one of four listings

People also find you on Bing, Apple Maps and Yelp, and when those disagree with Google, a customer has to guess which is right.

  • Bing Places can import your listing from your Google profile, so you do not retype it. After that, change details like your website in Google and sync, because a synced listing locks those fields in Bing.
  • Apple Maps can list your business before you have claimed it. When we checked our own Apple Maps place card in August 2026, it was unclaimed and every link on it went to Yelp, not to our website.

None of this shows up as an error in your dashboard. A profile with the wrong category, an old service area or an unclaimed Apple card looks fine from the inside.
